Well from the looks of it
Well from the looks of it you are just applying paint directly to the model instead of making a blank skin first to work from. To do that desaturate the original skin (try and work from one with minimum lettering and paint variation) then carefully lighten it till it is almost white, carefully to preserve the skins details. The make your paint layer, set it to multiply (or whatever the equivalent in PSP is) and paint. You should now have some texture showing through the pain and will greatly inhance the realism.
I don't think anyone has
I don't think anyone has done that on re-paints, it is to complicated and time consuming messing with shaders or whatever, if someone where to bring out a detailed guide thats clear and simple for Paint Shop pro 8 then maybe i would give it some thought into trying that.

This has nothing to do with
This has nothing to do with shaders, just textures.
see this for example
http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info.php?form_fileid=17893&CUTHERE=7fa...
Using just paint works fine for certain trains like the MK3's but looks very bad on items like the tankers and 08, compare Dereks black 08 to the Guinness one, yours seems to have virtually no detail in the texture which is what makes the model realistic.
Hi Nikos1 now lets see
I`m glad you brought this up - you see the real black guinness 08s had little detail you could see because they used a glass black and are fresh out of the paint shop .
So they look spot on - now i dunno if you have seen these 08s in real life or not.
But because of them being jet black it is hard to see dark shading anywhere.
the only way round that was to make the detail lighter and thats not how the real ones look.
I do understand what you are sayin - could we please see some of your paint jobs as a guide.
I am not a painter nor to i confess to being one - i`m a route builder really but no one else is doing paint jobs - i like a bit of colour.
Anyway this is not a decussion forum so please come and show us your hard work at our site.
Thanks once again regards

Not bad guys, but you should
Not bad guys, but you should try not to use solid colors as they dont look as realistic, take a look at how the default items are, theres ussualy some texture under the paint.
not quite sure how you mean,
not quite sure how you mean, textures under the paint?
