May 2008 Update
New Route Announcement!
RSDL are proud to announce the newest Official Add-on to be launched for Rail Simulator: The Isle of Wight! This add-on consists of the Island Line and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, located on the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight just off the South coast of England.
Running between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin, the Island Line is 8.5 miles long and operates ex-London Underground tube trains.
Originally named the Isle of Wight Railway, the line opened in 1864 and it wasn’t long before an extensive network was established all over the island. In 1921 it became part of the Southern Railway company, and was rebranded the Island Line when privatisation of the UK railways took place in 1996. Despite its isolation, this iconic railway line has survived numerous reductions in the UK Rail Network, and to this day continues to be a popular attraction to tourists as well as a vital transport link to the mainland.
As part of an ever growing interest in railway preservation, the Isle of Wight also features a steam railway which links with the Island Line at Smallbrook Junction. This line extends 5.5 miles along historic track beds that have been revived by hard working volunteers and enthusiasts. This line exclusively operates stock that has been restored from long since redundant trains previously used on the island.
Keep checking back for further updates regarding this add-on.
